Bible Crafts and Activities for Kids

Theme: David

Crafts and activities relating to David: David and King Saul, David and Goliath, and David hides from King Saul.

David Helps King Saul

Scripture Reference:   1 Samuel  16:11-3, 17:13
Concepts - David was a helper; you can help too. David  played music for the king. You can help people who are sad feel happy. Music can make sad people feel happy. Sing praises to God. (Psalm 9:2)

Crafts:
 1. Make a sad face/happy face King Saul puppet Craft - Before class cut out 2 - 5" circles from poster board for each puppet.  Glue the circles back to back onto a large craft stick. Have the children draw a happy face on one side and a sad face on the other. Let them glue or tape on hair. Make crowns out of folded up aluminum foil and tape them on when they are all done.  Use the puppets during story time.

Games and Activities:

1. Sing a song:

                   Sad King Saul
(sing to the tune of Mary had a little Lamb)

Poor King Saul was very sad, very sad, very sad,
Poor King Saul was very sad, he didn't know what to do.

David came to make him glad, make him glad, make him glad.
David came to make him glad, he sang some songs for him.

On his harp he played some songs, played some songs, played some songs.
On his harp he played some songs, then King Saul sang along.

David and Goliath

Scripture Reference: 1 Samuel 17
Concepts - We can do anything when God is on our side.

Free Sunday School Lesson for Chidlren - "David Take a Dare " - In this lesson your children will learn that God helped David fight the giant and he will help them too.

Crafts and Activities:

Battle is the Lord Picture craft1. "The Battle Is The LORD's!" Wall hanging - Before class print out the pattern onto pretty colors of cardstock (heavy paper), (Pattern available to members only) and cut them out. Bring in some small smooth river rocks. Let your children each pick out five rocks. As they try to decide which ones they would like, tell them that the person in the story today had to pick out five, smooth stones also. We will find out what he used them for at the end of the story. When a child has picked five stones that he likes, place a small dab of tacky glue on each stone and let him decide where he would like to place them on his wall hanging. To finish, add a string or yarn to the top of the wall hanging. NOTE - This craft is for children five or older. Younger children could choke on small stones. Make sure the stones won't fall off the paper; and hand the wall hanging to the children's parents when they show up to pick their children up. Be careful not to leave any small stones behind.

David's stones and bag craft2. Make David's Stones and Bag

What you will need: Brown paper lunch bags, computer paper, string, glue, and a hole punch.

What to do:

1. Fold the top of the bag down towards the inside of the bag 1 1/2". Fold it back three times so that your bag stands about 5 1/2" high. Punch 14 holes in the bag evenly spaced. Punch four in the front, four in the back, and three on each side.

2. Make a sample craft. Cut a length of string and weave it in and out of the holes starting in the front. Cut more string the same length for your students.

3. Print out the bag labels onto brown paper, cut them out, and glue to the front of the bags. (A pattern for this craft is available to members only on The Resource Room.)

4. Make play dough or buy it. You will need red, green, yellow, orange, and blue. To make the dough place a 1-pound box of baking soda, one cup of cornstarch, and 1 1/4 cups of cold water in a saucepan. Cook over low heat until the dough looks like mashed potatoes. Remove from the heat. Cover it with a damp cloth until it cools and then store in a plastic bag. This dough gets very hard. It feels a little gritty so have some wet paper towel available for the children.

5. You can also include a little booklet that explains what each color represents. See "David's Little Stones" craft below.

3. David's Little Stones Craft - Each stone is a different color and has words on the back that will help them not to be afraid.

Games and Activities:

1. Play a "Duck, Duck, Goose" like game. - This idea comes from Regunia off of our bulletin board.  Thanks for sharing this idea with us. Children sit in a circle. One child walks around circle patting each child on the head saying, "David, David, David." When they call someone "Goliath," "Goliath" chases them around circle back to Goliath's old spot. Then Goliath starts, "David, David", etc.

David Hides From King Saul

Under His Wings - Bible Lesson from The Resource Room - In this lesson children learn about David and how he trusted God to protect him when he was on the run from King Saul. They learn that God protects us like a mother bird protects her chicks. We don't have to be afraid because we can trust in him.

This lesson includes:

1. Hen and Chick Color Sheet - In class have your children color the picture. You can also bring in small feathers for them to glue to the hen. Write the Bible verse on the left-hand side of the picture. (This pattern is available to members only.)

2. "He covers us with his Feathers" color and craft sheet - Cut out the wings. In class have the children color the hen and the wing. Punch a whole in the wing and the hen where indicated by the dot. Attach the wing with a paper fastener so that that wing can be moved up and down to cover the hen's chicks. The Bible verse can be written at the top of the page. (This pattern is available to members only.)

3. "Covered with Feathers" Color and Craft Sheet - In class have your children color the picture and then glue feathers (This pattern is available to members only.)

4. Printing and writing worksheets - This lesson was designed to go along with ABC worksheets using the Bible verse. Children practice writing the letter A in print or cursive or write the complete verse in cursive or print. (This pattern is available to members only.)

5. Mother Hen with Her Chick - For directions to this craft go to Crafts Page 1. (This pattern is available to members only.)

6. Make a Bird Head Craft - Cut 2 1/2" or larger Styrofoam balls in half. Use 1/2 per bird head. Cut beak shapes from yellow or orange fun foam or construction paper and glue to the head. Glue googly eyes to the head. Poke feathers into the Styrofoam to finish. Make sure you buy feathers with a stiff enough shaff to go into the Styrofoam.

Activities:

1. Memory Verse Search - Before class print out and cut out the memory verse chicks. (Available to members only.) Make more than one copy of the pattern. Write one word of the memory verse on the belly of each chick. Hide the chicks around the room.  You can tape them to the bottom and the back of chairs and on the walls, etc. After the lesson place the mother hen (use the pattern from the craft) in the center of the table (or tell them you are the mother hen).  Tell the children that the mother hen is calling for her little chicks. Ask them to help the mother hen find her chicks and when they find one, bring them to you or the hen picture.  When all the chicks are found have the children take turns trying to figure out the order the chicks need to be in to spell out the memory verse. If you have children who can't read or who are learning to read, ask them questions about the verse. For example, you can say, "Who has the word "he"? It starts with the letter "H". You can also write the words on the board and have the children match up their chick to the words on the board.

2. Feather Relay - Divide your children up into teams. Give each child a feather. Mark a starting point and an ending point. On the word go the first player in each team places his feather on the floor and uses a piece of cardboard to blow the feather across the room to the end mark and then back again. When the first player returns, the second player goes, and so on until the whole team has had a turn. The first team to have all their players cross the finish line wins. Preschool children will just enjoy trying to get their feathers across the line without touching them.

A complete lesson with crafts, activities, a song, and learning activities for home shcool use are included in this lesson and is available to members only.
