Creation Day 6 - Man

Bible Verse:

Teaching Concept:

God created everything, but he created man in an extraordinary way. He breathed his very breath into him and gave him life. His breath flows through us today through his Holy Spirit. God gives us life, and he wants us to be happy and live our life for him.

Opening Activity

1. Make a Playdough Man

Give the children each a ball of playdough. Tell the children to try to make a man from their play-dough. Tell them that they will use their man shape during the lesson.

The Lesson

(Before class, gather some clean, dry dirt in a plastic container, and just before the lesson, pass it around the room so all the children can see it and feel it. Ask the children if they know what it is. You will tell them later during the lesson what it is.)

The Bible tells us that in the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. He created light and darkness and made the land and the oceans. He made all kinds of plants to fill the earth. He made the moon and stars and the sun. He filled the oceans with all types of fish and other living creatures, and he made birds to fly in the sky. Then he made all kinds of different animals to live on the land. (Open your Bible and read Genesis 1:24, “And God said, ‘Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind:’ and it was so.”

How did God create all these things? (If none of your children know the answer, read the verse again, emphasizing “God said” and “it was so.” Tell your children to listen carefully for the answer.) God made all these things by his words. He said, “Let it be,” and they appeared.

Let’s try to create something like that. What should we make? (Take requests from your children. You might say something like, “Let there be a cute little puppy for every child in this room.”) Did it work? No, only God can create things using his words.

God created all kinds of wonderful things, but God wasn’t finished yet. There was still something missing. Do you know what that was? God wasn’t finished because he didn’t make people yet.

God gathered some dirt from the ground. (Show the children the dry dirt.) He formed it into a shape. (Add water to the dirt.) God formed it into the shape of a man. (As you talk, try to form the dirt into a man.) He made a head, arms, legs, feet, and hands. (Don’t worry if your form doesn’t look like a man or if it doesn’t work. Ask the children to hold up their men shapes. Tell them to try to make a man shape if they haven’t already. Give each child a chance to show their shape or give a prize for the best man shape.)

Do you think God’s shape looked like these? (Give the children a chance to respond.)

Many scientists and science books tell us that we are just another type of animal and that we actually evolved from apes and monkeys. But the Bible tells us that we are much more like God than animals. God did something very special when he made man. God didn’t make man like he did all the other creatures he created. He breathed his very breath into the nostrils (nose) of the shape he had made, and the shape came alive! God called him Adam. And then he made Eve from one of the ribs of Adam. Adam and Eve were the very first people who ever lived. Open your Bible and read Genesis 2:7, “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”

But here’s the most important part! When God breathed his very breath into the first man, he was not only thinking about Adam; he had a much bigger plan than that. He also had a plan for you and me. The Bible tells us that God knew us before we were ever born. He loved us and planned for us. His breath also flows through us through his Holy Spirit. He wants us to live for him. He wants us to be happy and to know that we are loved.

Crafts and Activities

1. Musical Chairs Bible Verse Review Game

Set up the chairs as you would for musical chairs, except use one chair for each child. Write the Bible verse, one word per page, on sticky notes. As you go over the verse, stick the words to the back of the chairs. Play like musical chairs, except each time the music stops, go over the Bible verse. Stop at a different word of the verse each time and have your children tell you what the missing word is. The child sitting in the seat with the missing word on it takes the sticky note off and places it on the board. Keep playing until the whole verse is complete. You don’t have to do the words in order. Repeat the entire verse each time, so your children learn it.

2. Play a Guessing Game

Before class, write the following items on index cards: sun, star, tree, flower, man, moon, cat, cow, whale, bird, and seeds. Divide your children up into teams. Give each team a ball of play dough. Pick one person from each team to be the “creator.” Show the “creators” the first index card. On the word go, each “creator” should try to form their ball of clay into a form representing the word on the card. The team that guesses what the form is first wins that round and gets one point. Keep playing until everyone has had a chance to be the “creator.” The team with the most points wins.
