"Just Dog" by Kiawyn Oram
Dog wanted a name. Everyone called him just Dog, but he wanted a special name like Digger or Barker. He did everything he could think of to get their attention. He dug in the yard so they would call him "Digger", and he barked at everything so they would call him "Barker", but none of his efforts paid off. All they called him was "Bad Dog" and "Be quiet, Dog". Finally he decided to think and come up with a better plan. Dog realized he was getting the wrong kind of attention and instead did things to help and behaved himself. Soon his owners started to notice. He was so good that they decided to give him a "good dog's name", but when they started thinking of names like "Sweetheart", "Honeybuns", or "Pudding Face" Dog just couldn't help it and started barking his head off. Those weren't the kinds of names he wanted and decided he was happy with just "Dog" after all.
Discussion Questions for the Book |
|
- What is your dog's name?
- How did your dog get its name?
- Do you think your dog likes its name?
- Did your dog earns its name?
- What would be a better name for your dog?
- Do you know how to spell your dog's name?
- Where did you get your dog?
- What part of the story is depicted on the cover of the book?
- Have you ever done something you weren't supposed to do to get attention? What were the consequences?
- What did Dog do to get positive attention and a name? What can you do to get positive attention instead of negative attention? Help your child come up with a better plan.
- When do you like to get attention or have your parents notice you?
Fun Learning Activities to go Along With the Book "Just Dog"
Vocabulary Words
1. Make the Scottie Dog Craft above, the Dog Holding a Note Card Craft or the Faithful Dog Craft below. Then have your child write down the words he didn't know in the book "Just Dog" on stripes of 2" x 4" paper or on bone shapes and place them in the dog's mouth. Have him say the words as he puts them in. If he does not know one, have him place it in the back of the pile of words and keep playing until he knows all the words.
2. Make the Scottie Dog Craft above, the Dog Holding a Note Card Craft or the Faithful Dog Craft below. Write the words your child didn't know in the book "Just Dog" on strips of paper or dog bone shapes and hide them around the room. Have your children help the dog find the words and say the words as he finds them, and then place them in the dog's mouth.
Think about Good and Bad Attention
1. Talk about how everyone likes to get attention and be noticed, but that sometimes parents are very busy and can't always give their children all the attention they want. Talk about some things parents must do that takes attention away from their children such as: talk on the phone, pay the bills, answer the door, work, etc. Discuss what your child can do when you can't give him or her attention right away such as writing note so he doesn't forget his question, tapping on your arm to let you know he needs your attention and then waiting quietly until you can help him, or offering to help you with the chores so that his or her parents have more time to give attention, etc.

Stand-up Dogs Craft - Eight Different Breeds with Information Sheets!

Encourage your children to make a pet store sign and stock their store with animals and pet supplies. Provide play money, a cash register, and other things that might make it look more like a pet store.
The patterns are printed out on card stock, cut apart, and folded to make them three dimensional. The dogs stand up on their own.

Shop for Craft Supplies at S&S Worldwide

1. Cut a piece of cardboard 8" x 8" and then measure in 2" on each side and cut out the 4" x 4" square in the middle of the cardboard.

Watchdog Bible Verse Activity Sheet
"Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips." Psalm 141:3 Bible verse activity sheet available on The Resource Room.
In class have your children color the picture of the watchdog and cut out the bones and glue the bones in the appropriate place.
You can also buy small dog biscuits and have your children glue a few of them to their papers with flour and water paste. They can give the biscuits to their dogs at home as a treat. Tell your children that when they give their dogs a treat, they should try to remember to thank God for giving them a dog (a watchdog, if their dog is one) and to ask God to help them to be a watchdog over what they say this week. To make flour and water paste just add a small amount of water to a quarter cup of flour. Add enough water to make it sticky but not watery.
If you don't want to use real dog biscuits you can make and use dog bone-shaped cookies that the children can eat themselves.
