1. Columbine Flower - "Blessed are the poor in spirit . . .” Matt. 5:3

The Columbine can remind us to be humble because it looks like it is bowing its head to pray. When we bow our heads and pray to God we humble ourselves before him. We are poor in spirit when we acknowledge that we are sinners who need God, and that everything we have comes from him.

2. Mourning Glory Flower- “Blessed are those who mourn . . .” Matt. 5:4

The Mourning Glory flower blooms and then dies the same day, but new flowers bloom the next morning bringing renewed beauty. God promises that he will comfort us when we are sad. He renews us daily.

3. Daisies - “Blessed are the meek . . .” Matt. 5:5

Daisies are bright spots in any field. People who leave them to grow soon discover that they can quickly take over an entire field creating a sight to behold. Daisies can remind us that kindness and gentleness are much more effective than forcefulness. Those who are meek will conquer evil and inherit the earth.

4. Cactus Flower - "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness . . ." Matt. 5:6

God created cacti to be able to survive months or longer without water, unlike humans who can only go without water for a few days. We not only need daily nourishment for our bodies, but also our souls. We will only be satisfied when we seek God daily for his guidance.

5. Poppies - Blessed are the merciful . . ." Matt. 5:7

Poppies have delicate little petals, and must be handled with extra care. The flowers last for only a short time after blooming. When we recognize our own weaknesses and need for God, and accept God's forgiveness, we can then accept other people's weaknesses and show them compassion.

6. Easter Lily - “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God." Matt. 5:8

White Easter Lilies are popular at Easter-time symbolizing purity and new life. They remind us of how Jesus gave up his life so that we might purified and have eternal life. When we ask God for forgiveness he forgives us and wipes our sins away.

7. Sunflower - “Blessed are the peacemakers . . ." Matt. 5:9

From a distance sunflower plants look like they have one or several large flowers on very long stems, but the flowers are actually flower heads consisting of hundreds of smaller flowers neatly arranged side by side in a cluster. This cluster of flowers can remind us of people living side by side in peace. The flower not only resembles the sun, but points towards heaven reminding us that those who are peacemakers will be called sons of God.

8. Dandelion - “Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness . . . " Matt. 5:8

Although dandelions have both medicinal and food value they are despised by homeowners and gardeners. They are poisoned, ripped from the earth, and cursed yet they continue to flourish. This flower can remind us that we should happy when people persecute us for our beliefs because we will be rewarded in heaven.

I want to thank you for the all the resources. This is my go to first and certainly the one I use the most. Thank you and God bless you in your work. Sandra 6/20/12

4. Blessed Are They Who Hunger and Thrist After Righteousness

Beatitudes Bible Lesson - Blessed are they who Hunger and Thrist After Righteousness

"Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled." Matthew 5:6

Teaching Concept:

In this lesson children learn that they can be happy when they try to do what is cright even when it is hard. Jesus is our perfect example of how to resist temptation. It is impossible to do the right thing all the time no matter how hard we try. That is why God sent his only son who was the only truly righteous person. Jesus gave his life for us so that we can become righteousness through him, and if we keep the faith we will earn a crown of righteousness.
