Wrinkles & Sparky II

Best Friends

This is another Wrinkles and Sparky puppet skit, with a serious theme, meant to go with a lesson about Jesus, Mary, Martha, and Lazarus from Luke 10:38-42 and John 11:1-44.

Leader: Do you remember, boys and girls, who visited us last week?

Boys and girls: Wrinkles and Sparky!

Leader: That's right! Let's call them.

Together: Wrinkles! Sparky!

Wrinkles and Sparky: (appear together, but Sparky is very excited, barking and talking.
Wrinkles is subdued, moving slowly, trying to avoid the exuberance of Sparky.)

Sparky: Listen! (Put hand to ear if possible.) Do you hear that announcement on the radio?

(Play prepared tape of circus music with an announcement of the circus coming to a place near you.)

Sparky: Come on, Wrinkles. You're my best friend. We've got to go to the circus. It's
just down the street!

Wrinkles: Not now, Sparky.

Sparky: But it would be such fun! You know, the clowns, and lions, and tight-rope
walkers and ...

Wrinkles: Sparky, I'm just not in the mood. You see ...

Sparky: Wrinkles, we've just got to go. I've been looking forward to this all year.

Wrinkles: (Looks very sad. Sits down.)

Sparky: (Still jumping around, anxious for a yes answer.)

Leader: Sparky! I think Wrinkles wants to tell you about something. Remember, friends
listen to what the other has to say.

Sparky: (Stops suddenly, pauses, and looks directly at Wrinkles.)

Wrinkles: I'm sorry, Sparky. I've been trying to tell you. My cousin just died last night.

Sparky: (Slowly, thoughtfully) Oh, Wrinkles! I'm sorry.

Wrinkles: She was very sick. We thought she would get better. But she didn't. She
went home to be with Jesus.

Sparky: (sympathetically) I understand now. It's okay if we don't go to the circus.
Maybe we can go next year.

Wrinkles: I feel very sad. I don't feel like having fun, or going to the circus.

Sparky: I feel bad that you are sad, Wrinkles.

Wrinkles: Sparky, I'm glad you understand.

Sparky: We're best buddies, right? (Gets close to Wrinkles, as if to hug him.)

Wrinkles: You know, Sparky, I do feel better, just knowing you care about me and that
you don't mind waiting to go to the circus.

Sparky: No, I don't mind. I was just thinking about how Jesus was a friend to Mary,
Martha and Lazarus in our story today. Jesus was sad, too, when his friend died.

Wrinkles: I was thinking about the Bible verse our Bible teacher had us learn.
That is, I can almost remember it. Boys and girls, can you help me remember the
verse from John 15:12, 14, 15?

All Together: "This is my command: Love each other as I have loved you. You are my
friends if you do what I command you. I call you friends."

Wrinkles: Sparky, you've been a friend to me by staying here with me when you could
have went to the circus. Thank you for being my friend, Sparky. We'd better go, now.

Wrinkles and Sparky: Bye, boys and girls.

All: Bye, Wrinkles and Sparky!

Follow Up Questions for the Leader:

Why did Wrinkles feel sad? His cousin had died.

How was Sparky a friend to Wrinkles? He gave up going to the circus to be with his friend. He tried to help him feel better.
