Easter Interactive Learning Activity for Children's Ministry

 

 

Use symbolic items from your home to tell the story of Easter and then review with fun games. This lesson and the following games can be used with any age group.

 

Preparation:

Collect the following items:

Note: You can make a crown of thorns using brown packaging paper. Cut the paper into a 2" strip. Crinkle it up and wind the strip to make a cord. Use a thinner strip of paper to make thorns in the same way.  Cut the cord into one-inch sections and glue them to the crown cord for thorns. To finish forming the cord into a circle shape, wind the end of the cord around the circle shape. 

 

Place all the items in separate gift bags so that the items cannot be seen. If you have older children, you can use all the same color of bags to make it harder. For younger children, you can decorate the bags to all look different or use different sizes of bags.

Note: If you don't have a lot of time, you don't need to use all the items, or you can break up the lesson into two lessons.

 

The Lesson:

Place all the items in the bags in the middle of your table so that all the children can see them. If you have older children, hand out pieces of paper with the Bible verses you will be using. Have the children look them up before the lesson so they will be ready to read them when they are called on.

Open your Bible to the first verse and read it or have one of your students read it.


1. Donkey and Palm Branch - Ask one of your students to pick one of the bags that he or she thinks might contain the donkey and palm branch. Pull out the item that is in the bag and show everyone. If it is the wrong item, put it back in the bag and give another child a chance to pick a bag until someone picks the correct one. Pull out the donkey and palm branch and place them on the table so that everyone can see them. Read Matthew 21:7-9 or have a student read it.

"They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”, “Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

Explain - Jesus and His disciples were going to Jerusalem to celebrate Passover. When the people saw Him coming, they became very excited! They thought Jesus might be the new king they had been waiting for. They placed palm branches and their cloaks on the ground to welcome him like a king.


 

2. Bottle of Perfume - Ask a student to pick one of the bags in which he or she thinks might be the perfume. (Each time you ask a child to pick a bag, it will get easier to find the correct item since the children have already picked some of the bags.) When a child has picked the correct bag read Matthew 26:6-7.

"While Jesus was in Bethany in the home of Simon the Leper,  a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured on his head as he was reclining at the table."

Explain - The disciples were shocked that the woman poured expensive perfume on Jesus. They thought the perfume could be sold and the money used to help the poor. But Jesus wasn't worried about how much the perfume cost. He knew His time on earth was almost finished. The perfume was a special way to show that He was getting ready for His death.

What's Missing?

  1. Place all the items from the lesson so that the children can see them. Tell them to close their eyes. Remove one of the items and then tell them to say which item is missing.
  2. The child who says which item is missing first gets to take a turn removing an item.
  3. Keep playing until all the children have had a chance to remove an item.
  4. If you have older children, ask them what the item has to do with the Easter story.
