This patriotic, faith-based activity is a meaningful way to celebrate the Fourth of July while helping children remember that our blessings, our families, and our freedoms are gifts from God. Save the completed page in an envelope, jar, scrapbook, or box, and open them again next year to see how God has been working in your family.

Before putting your time capsule away, gather your family and pray together. Thank God for the memories you made, the freedoms you enjoy, and the people He has placed in your family. Ask Him to guide your family in the coming year and help each person grow in faith, love, and thankfulness.

Family Time Capsule Ideas

Encourage your children to create their own time capsule page, drawing pictures and writing about themselves, their family, their dreams, their likes and dislikes, etc. Place their completed pages with the family page in a large envelope, decorated folder, jar, box, or small plastic container. Encourage them to open it next year on Independence Day, or save it for five or ten years.

THINGS TO INCLUDE:

1. Completed Family Time Capsule Page
Have the whole family fill out the main page together. Add the family name, date, family members, favorite activities, what they thank God for, and their prayers for the future.

2. Individual Family Member Pages
Each person make their own page. Younger children can draw pictures instead of writing about themeselves or parents can write what they say.

3. Family Photo
Take a picture on Independence Day and either print it right away or leave a space to add it later.

4. Handprints or Fingerprints
Use red and blue washable paint or ink pads. Children can add handprints, fingerprints, or thumbprint stars.

5. A Prayer for the Family
Write one short prayer thanking God for the family, their home, their country, and the freedom to worship Him.

6. A “God Is Working In Our Family” Note
Ask each person to share one way they have seen God helping, guiding, comforting, or blessing their family this year.

7. Favorite Memory From the Day
Have each person write or draw their favorite part of the celebration: a picnic, fireworks, parade, family meal, game, prayer, Bible verse, or time spent together.

8. A Small Patriotic Craft
Add a small paper flag, star ornament, bookmark, coloring page, or Bible verse card.

9. A Newspaper Clipping or Printed News Headline
Families can include one age-appropriate headline or short note about what was happening in their town, church, or country in 2026.

10. A List of Blessings
Make a family “thankful list” with things like home, food, church, friends, grandparents, cousins, pets, health, freedom, and God’s love.

11. A Scripture Card
Include a verse such as:

“As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above.” James 1:17

“Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.” Psalm 33:12

12. A Letter to the Future
Have the family write a short letter to themselves to read next year. They can write about what they hope will happen, what they are praying about, and how they want to grow closer to God.

Faith-Based Independence Day Celebration Ideas

Families can use the printable as part of a simple Fourth of July family devotion or celebration.

Start with a prayer.
Thank God for your family, your home, your church, and the freedom to worship Him.

Read a Bible verse together.
Joshua 24:15 works well because it focuses on the family serving the Lord.

Talk about freedom.
Ask: “What are some freedoms we are thankful for?” Then connect it to the freedom we have in Christ and the blessing of being able to pray, worship, read the Bible, and gather with other believers.

Share family blessings.
Go around the table and let each person finish this sentence: “This year, I thank God for…”

Make a family memory.
Take a walk, have a picnic, play a patriotic game, sing a hymn or patriotic song, make a craft, or take a family picture.

End with a family prayer.
Pray for your family, your community, leaders, churches, military families, and people who do not yet know Jesus.
