What Do Raccoons Eat? Learning Activity
After studying the eating habits of raccoons, ask your students to cut out the items from the activity sheet. Have them sort these items into two categories: what they believe a raccoon might eat and what it would not eat. Distribute the raccoon activity sheet to the class. After studying the outward features of a raccoon, encourage your students to add details to the raccoon. Finally, they can "feed" the raccoon by placing the cut-out items it might eat between the raccoon's hands.

Raccoon in a Trash Can 3D Activity Sheet
Raccoons are infamous for their clever antics in searching through trash cans, often leaving chaos in their wake. These resourceful omnivores feast on a diverse diet that includes fruits, nuts, berries, insects, small mammals, fish, amphibians, and even carrion. Their knack for scavenging makes them adept at discovering easily accessible treasures in unsecured garbage cans and bird feeders. This adaptability not only highlights their intelligence but also serves as a reminder for us to secure our waste and protect our outdoor spaces from these mischief-makers.
Children will enjoy creating this 3D display featuring two mischievous raccoons rummaging through a garbage can. First, they can glue the garbage can pattern onto the background scene to make it stand out. Next, they should place the raccoon pattern inside the garbage can. Children can then glue small pieces of paper and other recycled materials both inside the garbage can and on the ground around it. They may also draw pictures of items they might find in the garbage can.
As the children work, it's a great opportunity to discuss how people can prevent raccoons and other animals from getting into trash cans. Talk about the implications of this behavior as well.
This activity sheet is available in a 3D version and a flat version.
