Lion Crafts and Activities for Kids

Flat Cat Craft for Kids- You can use this cute little cat to play a word game that teaches your children words that rhyme with "cat".  Children will love making their own flat cats to take home and help them learn to read.

What you will need: Two or three Styrofoam dinner plates or heavy duty paper plate for each cat, one small paper plate, acrylic paint, glue or staples, large paper clip, and sticky note paper or plain paper.

What to do:

  1. Cut out legs, ears, and a tail from one paper plate or a Styrofoam tray. I cut the feet from around the rim of the paper plate so that they naturally bend down. Try not to have the feet and tail stick out too far.  This makes it harder to spin because the tail and legs keep bumping on things.
  2. Glue or staple the legs and tail to the top of one plate.
  3. Cover that paper plate with another paper plate to form the cats body. The plates should be glued or stapled top to top.
  4. Fold the small plate in half to form the cats head.  Glue ears to the head at the fold.  Glue the head to the body.
  5. Paint the cat.

yarn lion craft for kidsYarn Lion Craft for Kids - This craft idea comes from the Making Friends Web Site.  Use the same directions for the yarn bugs at Making Friends and use the pattern for the lion's ears, face, arms and legs from this site.  This craft goes along with the lesson "Daniel Prays"  from The Resource Room. This craft was designed for kids second grade and up.

Instead of using egg carton cups you can use small drinking cups or 2" styrofoam balls.  You can cut out the patterns from fun foam like I did or just use card stock and let the children color the patterns and cut them out.

  3. In class have the children color and cut out the lion head.
  4. Glue the head in the center of the mane (mane should have the long side going horizontal).
  5. Cut tiny squares (2" X 2") and scrunch up into little balls - if using tissue paper. Paper tissue paper balls or pom poms into plastic bags. Fold top corners of plastic bags down and staple. Staple top of bags closed. Staple onto the back of head. Staple arms under mane. Staple legs to back of the bottom of bag.

What You Need: Markers or crayons, glue, orange fun foam, card stock, stapler, staples, scissors.

What To Do:

  1. Before class print out the pattern for the visor and the lion face onto card stock. Cut visors from orange fun foam. If you have very small children you may want to cut the inside of the visor a little smaller. You can always cut it bigger in class.

  3. In class have the children color lion head.
  4. Glue the lion head onto the foam lion head shape.

Daniel and the Lions Picture - Use this craft goes with the lesson on Daniel and the Lion's Den preschool children or the lesson for primary children.

What you will need: Crayons or markers, black or dark blue construction paper, scissors and glue sticks.

What To Do:

1. This craft can be used as a color sheet or a craft. If you are using it as a color sheet print out just the color sheet pattern. If you are going to use it as a craft print out the lion patterns also.

2. In class have the children color all the pictures.

3. Cut out around the arch shape on the Daniel color sheet page. Glue this picture on construction paper, leaving room for verse at the bottom. Color the verse from the lion patterns page, cut it out, and glue it on top of the picture at the bottom. If you are not using this version of the verse just write the verse on the bottom of the picture. Or write the verse on a separate sheet of paper for the children to glue on.

4. If you are using this activity as a craft you will also need: Yellow, orange, or brown foam or felt (or "fur" fabric) for the lion's manes, also other colors of foam, felt or fabric.

5. Have the children color the parts of the pictures that you won't be cutting out of foam or felt. Cut out around the arch shape on the Daniel color sheet. Cut around Daniel's hands. His hands will be lifted up to fit the lions' manes
underneath when gluing them on. Glue the picture onto construction paper, leaving room for the verse at the bottom. Color the verse from the lion patterns page, cut it out, and then glue it on top of the picture at the bottom. Color an extra lion and Daniel's head covering from the lion pattern page and cut it out (the third lion is optional).

Cut loosely around the mane shapes and Daniel's head covering. Use them as patterns to cut out of foam, felt or fabric. Glue all the pieces on, lifting up Daniel's hands before gluing on the mane, gluing on the lions' faces last. Glue on the verse overlapping the Daniel picture. Encourage the children to use their picture to tell the story to their family or friends.

Scaredy Cat Hand Puppet Craft for Kids

What you will need: card stock (heavy paper) orange construction paper or computer paper, crayons, scissors, glue or tape.

What to do:

1. Print out the patterns for the top of the head and the jaw onto cardstock. (I used a tan color).

2. Before class cut out the patterns and assemble them if you don't have much time in class.

3. Starting with the top of the head (the pattern with the eyes) fold on the fold lines and also make a crease from the top of the nose to the top of the dotted lines as shown in the picture. Glue the smaller trapizoid shape to the center tabs. This will be the roof of the lions mouth. Then bring down the sides of the larger trapizoid and glue over the tabs that have the smaller trapizoid glued to it.

4. To make the jaw, fold in on all the dotted lines except the top fold. The tab should be on the inside. Glue the tabs down to form an envelope shape. Fold the top tab away from the opening in the envelope. Glue the tab onto the inside of the lions head so that the opening of the envelope shape is on the outside. The child should be able to put his fingers in the lines head and his thumb in the lions jaw and open and close the mouth by moving their fingers and thumbs aways from each other.

5. In class show the children how to cut long strips of construction paper about 1/2" thick (Or cut them before class). Have them curl the construction paper strips around a pencil or crayon and then glue them to the head. To finish glue the ears on and color the puppet.
